We are well over halfway through the Chronic Illness Challenge. On day 18 we explore the question: Do you think you have become a better person through being ill? Explain.
In the past, I was a fairly nice, but very quiet child growing up. After I was diagnosed with epilepsy, my personality stayed pretty much the same.
As a result of having to deal with certain complexities associated with epilepsy (the US health care system), I have developed some helpful qualities. When working with my students, I am more patient than I probably would have been. I can empathize with the students that do have chronic conditions and I can relate to some of problems they face.
In the past, I was a bit of a wallflower. I was the student who was always in the back of the room, but rarely spoke out in class. My communication skills were not that great as you may have guessed. After working with doctors, describing my symptoms, and talking to insurance companies, my communication skills did improve.
